A “free-standing” gas stove means the stove is not installed into a fireplace. That type of gas stove is called a fireplace insert. Some free-standing stoves are on legs, others on pedestals, but all sit at least a few inches above the floor.
A fireplace insert is a self-contained appliance that fits into an existing fireplace and can be fueled by gas, wood, wood pellets, or electricity. Fireplace inserts are often used to replace old, inefficient wood fireplaces with cleaner-burning, more efficient appliances.
Use outdoor air for combustion and burn at a lower temperature to create flames that look like a real wood fire. Vented logs require a functional chimney to vent burning by-products outside the home, so the damper must be left open while the fireplace is in use. This can reduce the amount of heat produced compared to unvented logs.
Use air from inside the home for combustion and burn at a higher temperature to ensure no gases are left over. Unvented logs are more efficient and reliable than vented logs, and they release heat and moisture into the same room where they're installed. However, they aren't designed to be a property's sole source of heat.
