A “free-standing” woodstove means the stove is not installed into a fireplace. That type of woodstove is called a fireplace insert. Some free-standing stoves are on legs, others on pedestals, but all sit at least a few inches above the floor.
A fireplace insert is a self-contained appliance that fits into an existing fireplace and can be fueled by gas, wood, wood pellets, or electricity. Fireplace inserts are often used to replace old, inefficient wood fireplaces with cleaner-burning, more efficient appliances.
A fireplace is a safe place for a fire, lit to give off light and heat. Generally made of brick or stone, a fireplace includes a firebox to contain the fire, a chimney to channel smoke and toxic gas out of the space, and several other key elements. Unlike an insert, there are no gaps and the fireplace is built into the wall.
